2020-21 SE AK Commercial Red Sea Urchin Fishery Announcement made 9/25/20: The 2020/21 commercial red sea urchin fishery will open Thursday, October 1, 2020 by emergency order. Areas will be open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days per week until guideline harvest levels (GHLs) are reached and areas are closed by emergency order or until the season closes on September 30, 2021. A total of 2,997,800 pounds of red sea urchins will be available for harvest this season. The remainder of the 9/25 announcement can be found HERE
2020-21 SE AK Commercial Geoduck Fishery Announcement made 9/21/20: Southeast Alaska commercial geoduck season begins by regulation on Thursday, October 1, 2020, with a guideline harvest level (GHL) of 523,500pounds. The first opening planned for October 7or 8 will be announced by October 7 and is dependent on paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) test results. 2020-21 SE AK Commercial Pot Shrimp Fishery Announcement made 10/15/20: Various areas closed to fishing. All commercial shrimp fishermen are required to notify the department within two business days of deploying gear and within two business days after ceasing fishing in a district, or portion of a district, with a GHL. Catcher–Processor and Catcher–Seller vessels must call the Fish and Game area office that manages the district they are fishing and report harvest information between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.,once per week by 12:00 noon each Wednesday, every week they conduct fishing operations.If warranted, the department may re-open a district 14 days after a closure, with a four-day notice. The estimate for when a district is to close may be highly variable. The redistribution of effort as the season progresses may greatly influence the daily harvest rates in districts.
State offices will be closed on Monday, October 19, in observation of Alaska Day. Under Alaska’s Health Mandates 10, 17, and 18, commercial fishing is an Essential Business and is part of Alaska’s Essential Services and Critical Infrastructure. Commercial fishermen should ensure that all travel and other activities in support of commercial fishing operations follow protocols in Alaska COVID-19 Health Mandates, which may be found here: gov.alaska.gov/home/covid19-healthmandates/
