Virtual Open Mic is still operating on Facebook and You Tube. Ted Howard initiated this idea and it has definitely grown. There are approximately 150 videos on both social platforms. Interestingly, only about half of the musicians or singers are Sitkans. The remainder are folks who have lived in Sitka or simply know people who live in Sitka. It’s a nice, lighthearted way to share the talents of musicians who are not able to utilize a live stage for their performances.
Wearable Art – We are excited to announce that we will be holding Wearable Art 2020 on September 19. To date we have 14 designers who are interested in participating. We are still talking to a couple of the “heavy hitters” of Wearable who have stated verbally that they are participating but haven’t let us know formally. Regardless, it looks like we will have a full show. We have joined forces with Ellen Frankenstein and ArtChange, Inc in this effort. With the changes in funding, working together with another art non-profit provides us with more opportunities to access grants to help finance the show. We look forward to this collaboration and where it will take us in the next few months. Andrew & Mary Hames have graciously agreed to be our emcees for our show.We still have volunteer positions available (Silent Auction, Backstage, VIP seating, Assisting w/hair & make-up – lots of opportunities & all hands are welcome. So…what happens if we cannot hold the show in September? We do have a Plan B. If COVID prevents us from holding the show, the committee has decided to move it back to its original month of March, 2021.
Monthly Grind: Plans are underway to for the next season of Monthly Grinds. The first Grind is planned for Sept. 25, with the theme being Artist’s/Songwriter’s Grind. Currently, most of the Monthly Grinds are open and without themes. If you are interested in producing a Grind show or just helping, contact Jeff Budd. He will help you get connected to the correct individuals.
