On Wed. Dec. 9th, UAS Sitka gave an informative virtual presentation at the Chamber of Commerce (as part of their Fall Speaker Series). Speakers were the new UAS Sitka Campus Director Dr. Paul Kraft and the Program Director Joel Markis.
The full hour-long presentation is available on the Chamber Facebook page: Find the link to the video HERE
Dr. Paul Kraft spoke about overall impacts to the UA system from state budget cuts & Covid-19 and the fact that UAS Sitka was actually well-positioned in terms of virtual learning (because they have been working on this for years). His goals are: stabilize & increase enrollment, seek opportunities to partner w/local business & industry to enhance workforce development in Sitka & SE Alaska, increase dual enrollment (HS/college credit) offerings in SE, andmconnect the campus to the community and the community to the campus.
Joel Markis spoke about UAS’ Fisheries Technologies Program, giving an overview of the fisheries economic sector (one of the top four in Alaska). Based on the number of permit holders, SE is home to four of of the top ten fisheries communities in AK (Petersburg, Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau). Joel also talked about fisheries degree offerings, level of interaction/online participation, iPad classes (can be useful for fishermen out on fishing grounds), local internships where people come for hands-on internship in Sitka, and the plan to use the semester-intensive model for aquaculture in the future, as well as a future focus on seafood processing.
He also mentioned UAS Sitka has in the past partnered with SFAC during their off season for HOUSING (always a need), in response to Rachel Roy’s remarks about the concept of Sitka as a “destination campus.”

The office of Sitka Chamber/Visit Sitka will be closed from December 24 through January 3. Staff members will be working remotely on a limited basis.
