NW Coast Beginning Basketry

“Art S183 Harvest and Preparation of Basketry Materials” – Saturdays and Sundays from April 27 through May 5 from 9am-5pm at Sealaska Heritage Arts Campus, Textile Room 2, Downtown Juneau.
- Capacity is limited. Class cost is $25 (There is an additional fee of $90 for students seeking UAS credit.)
- Previous experience is not necessary to apply. Full participation is required.
- All tools and supplies will be provided by SHI.

If you are accepted to class, you must pay the fee to keep your spot in the class. *Space is limited, there are only 12 spots for this class. **Please note, a completed application will not secure your space in this class.

Introduction to gathering and processing of materials for weaving: Spruce roots are the focus of this class. Students must be able to hike at a low to moderate intensity level for 4-8 hours. Students must wear protective outerwear, a backpack with water and snacks, and be compliant to group gathering practices for safety. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to gather materials in Southeast Alaska for spruce root weaving while observing ancient Native practices regarding respect of the forests and all materials harvested. Students will have the rudimentary knowledge to independently go out and harvest materials with an understanding of how geography plays a key part in the success of gathering materials.
