The current Artist-in-Residence of the 2024 Alaska Native Artist Residency Program is Tina Cupell’aq Harness.
- She is a beader of mixed Yup’ik descent who is with us from Sept. 12 – Oct. 2, 2024.

friendsofSJM - There is still space in the in-person only Journaling Class for Healing and the Creative Mind on Wednesday, October 2nd. This class carries no fee, but does require advance registration. If interested please contact museum staff at (907) 747-8981. Harness will talk about the importance of journaling for the creative mind and give a quick overview of the benefits of getting thoughts – good and bad – out of our heads. Then she will provide some journal prompts to encourage reflection towards creative flow. Participants should bring their journals and pens.
In addition to creating art at the museum and studying the permanent collection, resident artists also hold lectures and hands-on-classes. The talks and classes will likely be held in-person but may also be on Zoom. The Alaska Native Artist Residency Program is underwritten by the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum.
Artist-in-residence Tina Harness (Yup’ik) spoke in-person Friday, Sept. 13 at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. In her talk entitled, “Traditional Relevance in our Modern Creative World,” Harness spoke about the ties between Yup’ik traditional art (everyday tools and wares) and how it influences Yupiit modern creativity today… 09/13/24 Zoom Meeting was CANCELLED due to Sitka-wide internet outage. Event was live in-person only.
Harness gave a second talk on Friday, Sept. 20th on a selection of cultural belongings from the museum’s permanent collection.
